Retailers focusing on Facebook for the Holidays

According to a new survey by accounting & consulting firm, BDO, 92% of CMO’s say that they are focusing mainly on Facebook for their social media efforts this holiday shopping season. That’s up from 76% in 2009. The sheer volume of users on Facebook as well as the increase in ‘social shopping’ behaviors are no doubt contributing factors to the sharp increase.

It’s not just Facebook

Facebook is definitely leading the way, but Twitter is also up as more and more spending is going towards social media marketing for retailers. According to the survey, Twitter use is also up for marketers going from 50% in 2009 to 61% in 2010.

More Bang for the Buck

Overall, social media spending is on the rise. Despite only 15% of CMO’s stating that social media accounts for a larger part of their marketing budgets (20 – 29%), we still see 75% of CMO’s say they’re focusing on social media this year, up from 50% in 2009. The reason is primarily due to the fact that in comparison to other forms of marketing & advertising, social media provides great ROI.
