A study was recently published by UMass Dartmouth on how the Fortune 500 are using social media, particularly Blogging, Twitter, and Facebook. In The Fortune 500 and Social Media: A Longitudinal Study of Blogging and Twitter Usage by America’s Largest Companies 2010, we can see that while a good portion of the Fortune 500 are embracing and leveraging social media, there are still a handful who don’t even have a presence.
A few key takeaways from this study:
- 23% of the Fortune 500 have a blog, up 7% from 2008 (16%), but only 1% from 2009 (22%)
- Retail has seen the largest ‘by industry’ increase thanks to the entry into blogging by Best Buy, Toys R’ Us and others
- In 2009 the INC 500 had 43% of companies with a blog compared to the Fortune 500′s 22%
- 60% of Fortune 500 have a corporate Twitter account
- 9 of the top 10 companies have a Twitter account and consistently ‘Tweet’
- 56% of Fortune 500 companies are on Facebook
- 147 (29%) of the Fortune 500 companies do NOT have a Twitter or Facebook presence
