With 2011 fast approaching, MediaPost recently released findings highlighting some possible consumer trends for the coming year. Overall the emphasis seems to be on what you may expect: Consumers focusing on economy and value as well as long-term benefits. No surprises there considering most of the world is still in some form of an economic downturn. What trends CAN we expect to see in 2011?
A few key trends:
- Due to women earning more, 2011 may see a counter trend to the ‘metrosexuality’ of men in a ‘masculinization’ of women, thus providing brands new marketing opportunities for products that have had specific gender roles attached in the past (ex: automobiles and sports)
- Smartphones are becoming the norm with increased interest in geography and apps which present brands an opportunity to engage and interact with consumers to drive business through mobile devices
- Americans are working longer than ever, and those over 65 could prove an untapped market in certain sectors. According to MediaPost: “Vitality, energy and longevity will become key product qualities in the food and drink sector, while health and beauty messages may need to center on anti-aging properties.”
- Urban farming continues to rise in popularity as growing your own fruits & vegetables is seen as both an economic solution as well as an environmentally sound practice, creating a growing market for new products and services
