Almost half of all social media sharing driven by Facebook

It’s no news that people love to share on the web. Sites like Digg and Reddit are built on the idea that people like to share and broadcast links.  What is worth noting is that Facebook accounts for 44% of social sharing on the web.

In a recent Techcrunch study done with the help of Gigya, almost 1 million shared stories were tracked in a month and the results were as follows:

Facebook: 44%

Twitter: 29%

Yahoo: 18%

MySpace: 9%

This tells us a few things about the way people share content online

  1. People like sharing links publicly – We see major broadcasting of links via Facebook and Twitter to wide audiences.
  2. Content is king – If you want to get your blog posts / articles passed around in social media, the content has to be likable.
  3. MySpace is just about dead – We’ve known this for a while, but the days of people using MySpace to share anything worthwhile are fading fast. The only major site with a worse showing than MySpace was Digg.

What does this mean to you as a social media marketer or blogger? Facebook is what regular people are using, so get there. We all know that Twitter is great for sharing our own links with our followers and generating traffic, but Facebook is a place you should be encouraging users to share on as well.
